Rethinking the Way We Celebrate Love and Ambition
Last year, I witnessed numerous couples being toasted at various celebrations, from weddings to birthday parties. As I surrounded myself with loved ones, I realized that these special occasions often bring out our subconscious expectations and validations of the happy couple.
The Unspoken Expectations
At one particular toast, I noticed a stark contrast between how the man and woman were being praised. The man was lauded for his intelligence, sense of humor, and promising future, while the woman was repeatedly complimented on her beauty, with little mention of her accomplishments or qualities beyond physical appearance. This phenomenon is not unique; in many relationships, the man’s financial potential and the woman’s physical beauty are still highly valued.
Breaking Free from Societal Expectations
Fortunately, many of us are now part of more egalitarian relationships, where we’re not solely defined by our physical appearance or domestic roles. However, even in these relationships, we often encounter more questions about our love lives than our ambitions, hobbies, or careers. This subtle bias guides us into believing that our personal achievements are less important than our romantic relationships.
The Power of Surrounding Yourself with Like-Minded Individuals
It’s essential to surround ourselves with people who understand and respect our passions, support our dreams, and see our horizons as big as we do. Whether you’re an aspiring teacher, a driven career professional, or a creative enthusiast, you need people who will encourage and help you achieve your goals. By doing so, we can break free from the arbitrary expectations society has set out for us and forge our own paths to success and happiness.
Embracing Individuality and Authenticity
Rather than conforming to others’ expectations, we should strive to find people who ask us about our genuine desires and listen to our responses. By doing so, we can create a supportive community that celebrates individuality and authenticity. This year, let’s focus on finding and nurturing relationships that uplift and inspire us to be our best selves.
