Embracing Career Evolution: A Journey of Self-Discovery
As I reflect on my early career, I realize how naive I was to think that my professional path would be straightforward and linear. My first “big kid” job at a small law firm was a great starting point, but I soon discovered that it wasn’t a lifelong commitment.
A Steep Learning Curve
I thrived in my role as a legal secretary, earning multiple raises and developing new skills. However, when my stepdad approached me about replacing his company’s retiring accountant, I was hesitant. Despite my lack of experience with numbers, I decided to take the leap, driven by the promise of a significant raise and full benefits.
A Setback and a Reality Check
Just as I was finding my footing in my new role, a car accident left me with a concussion and forced me to take a month-long break from work. This unexpected setback made me re-evaluate my professional skills and goals. I realized that my strengths lay elsewhere, and it was time to move on.
Returning to Familiar Ground
I revisited my old law firm, and to my surprise, my previous boss welcomed me back with open arms. It was a humbling experience, but I was grateful for the second chance.
A New Opportunity Emerges
Six months later, a job offer in the Admissions department of my alma mater caught my attention. Despite initial doubts, I applied and landed an interview. The position came with a pay cut, but the benefits and opportunities for growth were too enticing to resist.
Weighing the Pros and Cons
After crunching the numbers and discussing the decision with my partner, I decided to take the leap. The benefits, including health insurance, sick days, and vacation time, would offset the pay cut. Plus, I’d have the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree for free.
Finding My Groove
Today, I’m proud to be working at a private military university, utilizing my administrative skills to support their leadership camps and weekend conferences. It’s taken some trial and error, but I’ve finally found a job that aligns with my strengths and passions.
