Embracing the Art of Living Life to the Fullest
As a young adult, I’ve come to realize that my approach to personal finance is unconventional, to say the least. I’ve managed to avoid debt, but I’ve also chosen not to prioritize saving. My philosophy is simple: I want to make the most of my youth, enjoying every moment, and creating unforgettable memories.
Living Life on My Own Terms
I’ve been fortunate enough to call Hawaii home, surrounded by endless opportunities for adventure, socializing, and self-expression. I’ve never felt the need to say no to experiences that bring me joy, whether it’s trying new restaurants, traveling, or indulging in hobbies. My mantra is to take risks, seize opportunities, and not worry about the financial implications.
The Art of Budgeting
So, how do I manage to live this lifestyle on a modest income of less than $21,000 per year? It’s all about making smart financial decisions. For instance, I take advantage of my university’s tuition discount by working full-time, which brings my four-year degree cost down to just $5,000 per year. I also opt for public transportation, saving $390 per month compared to owning a car. My phone plan is a nominal $45 per month, and I’ve mastered the art of making my devices last longer. My rent is a steal at $575 per month, and I supplement my income with volunteer jobs and side gigs.
Creative Ways to Save
Volunteering has been a game-changer for me. I’ve “secret-shopped” for bikini companies, earning $300 in store credit. I’ve also volunteered at a non-profit that fixes computers, getting my laptop repaired for free. At a farmer’s market, I scored free kale drinks, ahi nachos, and mushroom fries, plus a vendor discount and a bag of fresh veggies every week. As a hair model, I got my hair colored and cut for free, saving $500. And, I landed a weekend job with a well-known retailer, scoring 40% off their clothing and adding 100 new pieces to my wardrobe.
The Value of Experience
My unconventional approach to finance has not only given me unforgettable experiences but also boosted my resume. I’ve learned to juggle multiple jobs, school, and volunteer work while maintaining a fulfilling social life. The best part? I’ve earned everything I have, and I know that I’m capable of creating the life I want.
A New Chapter
While I’ve enjoyed living life to the fullest, I’m now setting my sights on building a financial safety net. My goal for next year is to save $10,000, giving me a comfortable cushion as I enter the second half of my twenties. I’m confident that my thrifty habits will serve me well as I navigate this new chapter in my life.
