From Cold Email to Dream Internship: My Unlikely Journey
A Leap of Faith
In the summer of 2015, I took a chance and sent an email to Arianna Huffington, the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post. To my surprise, she replied within hours, and I landed a one-week internship at the UK office. But how did I make it happen?
My Background
As a 22-year-old woman from northern Vietnam, I had moved to the UK to pursue my education. With a keen interest in the financial industry, I began searching for summer internships. But with no editorial connections, no solid portfolio, and no English or journalism degree, I never thought I’d seek work experience in writing. That was until I started writing my blog, The Tingly Mind, and discovered my passion for creative writing.
The Email That Changed Everything
I googled Arianna Huffington’s email address and crafted a heartfelt 600-word letter, titled “I’m A 20-Year-Old Woman From Vietnam Asking For A Chance To Change My Life.” I introduced myself, shared my story, and made a specific ask for a job. To my surprise, she replied, and the HuffPost UK editor-in-chief followed up.
Securing the Internship
After exchanging emails, I secured a one-week internship at HuffPost UK. Although I was initially worried it might just be a day visiting the office, I was relieved to learn it was a proper work experience. I had to juggle my schedule, as I had already accepted a 10-week internship at a bank, but I was determined to make it work.
My Time at HuffPost UK
The internship was a valuable learning experience. I wrote news articles, pitched my own stories, and managed one of their Twitter accounts. Although it was more casual than I expected, I worked hard and enjoyed the opportunity. However, I realized that journalism wasn’t for me; my heart belonged to creative writing.
Lessons Learned
From this experience, I learned the importance of making specific and clear requests when cold-emailing. Be genuine, tell your story, and don’t worry too much about the length of the email. I also discovered the differences between journalism and creative writing, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore my passion.
Where I Am Now
Today, I’m proud of my bold move and grateful for the experience. I’ve learned to seize opportunities and explore my passions. As I start my graduate job at the bank, I’m excited for the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.
