From Couch to Triathlete: How I Found My Inner Athlete (and Paid the Price)

Finding My Inner Athlete

As a child, I was never exactly what you’d call athletic. In fact, my pediatrician predicted I’d never have much endurance in sports. Instead of using this as motivation, I used it as an excuse to quit everything I tried. But it wasn’t until college that I discovered my love for swimming. I joined the intramural team, competed in a few meets, and even showed some talent. However, my unhealthy lifestyle at the time took a toll on my body.

A Turning Point

One day, I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the person staring back at me. I knew I needed to make a change. I started with small steps, entering my first 5K and quitting smoking. Before long, I joined a Masters swim team and began competing again. My love for triathlons soon followed, and I was hooked.

The Cost of Pursuing Passion

As I delved deeper into the world of triathlons, I realized that it came with a hefty price tag. The equipment alone can be overwhelming, with costs ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 or more for a high-end bike. And that’s just the beginning. A sports watch, good running shoes, cycling shoes, a power meter, and swim equipment are all essential for a serious triathlete.

Race Entries and Hidden Costs

Race entries can range from $100 to $1,000 or more, depending on the distance and type of event. And then there are the often-overlooked essentials like massage, physical therapy, coaching, training plans, and nutrition. It’s easy to see how the costs can add up quickly.

Sacrifices for the Sake of Passion

To continue pursuing my passion for triathlons, I’ve had to make some sacrifices. I’ve cut back on meals out, opting to cook at home instead. I’ve also reduced my spending on clothing, opting for versatile, athletic pieces that can double as streetwear. I’ve even taken on freelance work to supplement my income and help offset the costs of my athletic pursuits.

Why It’s Worth It

So why do I continue to spend hundreds of dollars a year on triathlons? For me, it’s about more than just the finisher medals or the thrill of competition. Triathlons have given me a sense of purpose and belonging. They’ve inspired my children to get outside and be active, and they’ve provided me with a social outlet and a community of like-minded individuals.

Pursuing Passion at Any Cost

Everyone has their own passion or hobby that they’re willing to splurge on. Whether it’s art classes, flying lessons, or season passes at the local ski resort, we all have something that brings us joy and fulfillment.
