Surviving on a Shoestring Budget: The Power of Canned Foods
After graduating from college, I found myself struggling to make ends meet. With no job prospects in sight, I packed my bags and moved to the city, determined to make a living. My new roommates, who worked as babysitters, helped me get started by passing on a few shifts to me. I quickly learned that childcare could be a lucrative side hustle, especially when catering to French families with young children.
The Struggle is Real
As I navigated the city, I had to be mindful of every penny. I didn’t own a smartphone, so I relied on written directions and cash withdrawals from ATMs to get by. The thought of getting mugged and losing my wallet, along with my limited cash, kept me up at night. I survived on babysitting money, often skipping meals or making do with peanut butter and bananas.
A Brother’s Advice
One day, while joking with my older brother about the struggles of living on a tight budget, he suggested I try canned foods. Our mother had always emphasized the importance of healthy eating, so I was skeptical at first. However, my brother assured me that canned foods could be a game-changer, as long as I kept an eye out for labels like “No Added Sodium.”
Canned Food Hacks
Here are some of my favorite canned food hacks that will make your taste buds and wallet happy:
- Black Beans: Mix them with hot sauce and spread on corn tortillas for a quick and easy meal.
- Pinto Beans: Stew them down with garlic and use as a bean dip for parties.
- Lentils: Rinse and mix with canned tomatoes and feta cheese for a filling salad, or stew them down with garlic and onion for a hearty soup.
- Navy Beans: These mild-mannered beans play well with any flavor set, making them perfect for soups and stews.
- Garbanzo Beans: Rinse and sauté them with greens and rice for a gourmet-inspired meal.
- Green Beans: Toss them with balsamic vinegar and dijon mustard, and stir them into pasta for a delicious and budget-friendly meal.
- Pumpkin: Add ginger root and savory flavors for a unique and tasty soup.
- Tomatoes: Watch out for doctored-up mixes and opt for lower-shelf brands without added sugar, salt, and preservatives. Puréed, diced, or crushed, they make a great base for soups and pasta sauces.
- Pineapple: Use canned pineapple to create delicious and affordable sangrias, fizzes, or virgin summer beverages.
By incorporating these canned foods into my diet, I was able to survive on a shoestring budget while still enjoying healthy and delicious meals.
