Budget Breakdown: 5 Worthwhile Expenses That Blew My Budget
As I’ve recently adopted a new budgeting system, I’ve been tracking my expenses with ease. But, despite my best efforts, I found myself $300 over budget this month. The culprit? A few unexpected yet worthwhile expenses that I just couldn’t resist.
A New Approach to Budgeting
My new system involves paying for everything on one credit card, making it easier to track my expenses in one place. This approach has been working well for me, allowing me to curb my spending when necessary. However, I’m still getting used to it, and this month’s billing cycle caught me off guard.
The Overspending Culprits
So, what were the expenses that put me over budget? Here are the top 5:
1. New Underwear: A Necessary Indulgence
I treated myself to a new set of underwear, something I hadn’t done in 18 months. Although it was an impulse buy, I’m thrilled with my purchase. The comfort and quality are well worth the $44 price tag. However, I should have budgeted for it instead of dipping into my miscellaneous spending fund.
2. Celebrating Love: A One-Year Anniversary Dinner
My partner and I celebrated our one-year anniversary with a dinner at the bar where we had our first date. The meal was delicious, and we had a great time, but the $104 bill was steep. Although it was worth it, I should have budgeted for it instead of being caught off guard.
3. A Night Out: Avenue Q Tickets
I jumped at the chance to see Avenue Q with a friend, scoring decent theater seats for $54. While it was a great deal, I hadn’t budgeted for it, and it added to my overspending.
4. Annual Expenses: Amazon Prime Fee
My annual Amazon Prime fee of $100 caught me off guard, as I’m terrible at remembering to budget for big yearly expenses. Although it pays for itself in shipping costs alone, I should have been more prepared.
5. Convenience Costs: Notarizations at UPS Store
I paid $4 for notarizations at the UPS Store, a small expense that could have been avoided if I had gone to my bank instead. While it was convenient, I learned that sometimes it’s worth taking the extra time to save a few dollars.
Lessons Learned
While these expenses were worth it for me, I wish I had more wiggle room in my budget to accommodate them. To avoid lifestyle inflation, I’ll need to curb my spending in the upcoming month and make sure to budget for similar expenses in the future.
