From Speed Boats to Startup Success: My Unconventional Career Path
As I reflect on my professional journey, I’m reminded that sometimes it takes a few detours to find your true calling. My story is a testament to the power of experimentation, perseverance, and embracing uncertainty.
Renting Speed Boats and Washing Cars
After college, I found myself stuck in a cycle of temporary gigs, searching for the perfect job. To make ends meet, I worked as a boat rental worker, renting out speed boats and pontoons on our local lake. During the week, I’d drive to a car auction lot with a friend and vacuum and wash demolished cars. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was a chance to be outdoors and earn a living.
Dishwashing and Retail Adventures
Next, I landed a dishwashing job at Applebee’s, where I met new people and enjoyed the fast-paced environment. Around the same time, I worked as an Old Navy associate, which offered a change of pace and benefits. These experiences taught me the value of hard work and adaptability.
Behind the Scenes of a TV Show
I took a leap of faith and became a production assistant on a TV show, where I was responsible for catering to the needs of the talent and crew. Although it was a challenging role, I gained valuable insight into the entertainment industry.
Traveling and Booking Trips
My passion for travel led me to become a travel agent, but I soon realized that I wouldn’t be traveling as much as I thought. Instead, I helped others plan their trips. However, I did get a job with Continental Airlines, which allowed me to fly extensively during my time off.
Customer Service and Real Estate Ventures
After being laid off from the airline, I transitioned into a customer service role at E*Trade Financial, where I helped clients over the phone. This experience prepared me for my next venture as a realtor, where I assisted clients in buying their first homes. Although I enjoyed the potential for high earnings, I struggled with the commission-based structure and lack of self-motivation.
Startup Success and Finding My Niche
I then joined a startup company, where I discovered a new world of employment opportunities. I thrived in the fast-paced, flexible environment and eventually became a customer service manager. As the company grew, I took on new roles, including product manager and project manager. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and finding a niche that aligns with my strengths.
Blogging and Entrepreneurship
In my spare time, I started Budgets Are Sexy, a blog that eventually became a full-time job. This venture allowed me to combine my passion for writing, design, and finance. Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve built a successful business as a blogger, entrepreneur, and coach, helping others grow their online presence and manage their finances.
Coaching and Advisory Roles
As my business grew, I began offering coaching services to bloggers and individuals seeking financial guidance. I also advise financial startups, sharing my expertise to help them succeed. These roles have brought me a sense of fulfillment and purpose.
My unconventional career path has been a journey of self-discovery, perseverance, and embracing uncertainty. I’m grateful for the experiences that have led me to where I am today, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
