Breaking Free from the Shackles of My Eating Disorder
For over a decade, I’ve been trapped in a vicious cycle of restrictive eating and obsessive calorie counting, convincing myself it wasn’t a “real” eating disorder because I wasn’t severely underweight. But on August 3rd, 2017, I finally acknowledged the truth and took the first step towards recovery.
The Cost of Freedom
I spent $80 on a consultation with a certified eating disorder specialist, a small price to pay for the chance to reclaim my life. That hour-long conversation was difficult, but it marked the beginning of my journey towards healing. I’ve since committed to regular sessions, each one a crucial step towards breaking free from the grip of my eating disorder.
Rethinking My Priorities
To accommodate this new expense, I’ve had to reassess my budget. Gone are the days of reckless spending on unnecessary items, replaced by a newfound focus on healthcare and self-care. I’ve reduced my “fun money” budget and reallocated funds from my clothing budget to make room for this essential expense.
Small Steps Towards Recovery
It’s not just about the money; it’s about making tangible changes to my daily life. I’ve started by removing triggers, like deleting calorie-tracking apps and unsubscribing from guilt-inducing newsletters. I’m working towards eating two real meals a day, cooking more, and actually enjoying the food I prepare. It’s a process, but every small victory brings me closer to freedom.
A New Chapter
Eighty dollars may seem like a lot, but it’s a tiny fraction of the cost of living with an eating disorder. I’m finally taking control of my life, and it’s worth every penny. I’m not perfect, but I’m taking steps towards a healthier, happier me. And that’s priceless.
