Tattoo Cost Secrets: A Beginner’s Guide to Budgeting

The Art of Tattoo Budgeting: A Guide for Newbies

As a tattoo enthusiast with seven pieces to my name, I’ve learned that the cost of tattoos can be a mystery to those who don’t have them. Artists rarely disclose their rates, and many people keep their tattoo expenses private. I’m here to shed some light on the process and provide a guide for those new to the world of tattoos.

My Tattoo Expenses

Over the past nine years, I’ve spent approximately $1,300 CAD ($1,069.90 USD) on seven tattoos of varying sizes and styles. This doesn’t include tax or tip. My total expenses are based on about 14.3 hours of work, with my longest sitting lasting around four hours.

How Artists Charge

Most artists charge based on estimated time and charge per hour, with a minimum of one hour. Some may charge by the minute, like my first artist, who charged $2 per minute. From my experience, a realistic hourly rate is around $100/$82.30 USD per hour, although this may vary depending on location.

The Importance of Consultations

Consultations are crucial for newbies to understand how rates are determined. They give you a chance to meet the artists, see the shop, and discuss your design. Don’t skip this step! It’s also essential to ask about tipping policies, as some artists factor gratuity into the price.

Walk-ins: Proceed with Caution

While walk-in deals might seem tempting, I wouldn’t recommend them for newbies. Consultations are key to understanding the process and building a relationship with your artist.

Aftercare Essentials

You don’t need specialized “tattoo balms” for aftercare. Any scent-free salve will do. Avoid painkillers before your tattoo, as they can thin your blood. Instead, prepare with fragrance-free soap, loose clothing, and a friend to help with transportation afterward.

Touch-up Policies

Always ask about touch-up policies. Two of my three artists offer complimentary touch-ups on their own work. Don’t settle for anything less – you shouldn’t have to pay extra for unsatisfactory work.

Regrets and Reflections

I’ll admit it: I have regrets about some of my tattoos. But they don’t define my experience. Every tattoo serves as a reminder that our choices leave an impression, and we live with them. Instead of beating yourself up over mistakes, accept that they happen and move forward.

By being prepared and doing your research, tattoos can be a manageable expense and a great way to treat yourself. Happy inking!
