Shaken into Action: Preparing for the Unexpected
A few weeks ago, a sudden 3.6 earthquake struck Westwood, California, where I reside. As I lay in bed, feeling the walls and bed shake beneath me, I realized how unprepared I was for such an emergency. This jarring experience prompted me to take action and learn more about earthquake preparedness.
Understanding the Risks
Growing up in the Bay Area, I’ve always been aware of the possibility of earthquakes. However, it wasn’t until I researched the Loma Prieta Earthquake of ’89 that I grasped the severity of the situation. The epicenter of that quake was in Santa Cruz, not in the Bay Area as I had assumed. This newfound knowledge motivated me to take steps towards preparedness.
Creating a Go-Bag
The first step was to assemble a go-bag with essential items. According to the government’s guidelines, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, cash, and a passport are must-haves. I already had a bag, cash, and a passport, which saved me some time and effort. I added bottled water, extra contacts and solution, a First Aid Kit, and a change of clothes and shoes to my bag.
Gathering Additional Essentials
To complete my go-bag, I purchased a few more items, including a Swiss Army Knife, a flashlight, and non-perishable food such as Luna Protein bars, pineapple tidbits, and canned goods. I also bought a fire extinguisher for my apartment and a smaller one for my car.
The Cost of Preparedness
In total, I spent $71.41 on these items. While it may seem like a significant expense, the peace of mind that comes with being prepared for an emergency is invaluable. If I already had the fire extinguishers, the cost would have been much lower.
The Importance of Preparedness
This experience has taught me that it’s essential to be proactive and prepared for unexpected events. By taking the time to assemble a go-bag and gather necessary supplies, I can ensure my safety and well-being in the face of an emergency. I encourage everyone to take similar steps and prioritize their preparedness.
