Embracing the Reality of My First Job
As I reflect on my journey, I consider myself fortunate to have landed a job in my field just a month after graduating. However, it wasn’t the job I envisioned. I had grand expectations of working in a trendy office surrounded by MacBooks and an espresso machine. But reality had other plans.
A Steep Learning Curve
The biggest shock was my salary. I thought I’d be earning more, but I soon realized that job stability and a 401k were luxuries in themselves. Instead of dwelling on what could have been, I focused on the benefits that made my $30K salary more manageable.
PTO: A Game-Changer
I’ll never take my vacation days for granted again. Seeing my mom, who works in sales, sacrifice her personal time for work made me appreciate the flexibility my job offers. Being able to take a sick day, go on vacation, or simply enjoy holidays from the comfort of my own home is invaluable.
Surrounded by Financial Wisdom
Working at a non-profit that supports CPAs has been a blessing in disguise. I have access to free advice from experienced professionals who genuinely care about my financial well-being. My mentor, a CPA and inspiring female leader, has been instrumental in helping me create a budget and stick to it.
A Boss Who Trusts Me
I’m lucky to have a boss who treats me like a team member, not just an assistant. She gives me the space to work independently, which has boosted my productivity and job satisfaction. I encourage others to find a work environment that respects their autonomy and values their contributions.
Investing in My Growth
My employer is committed to investing in my personal development. We’ve had discussions about creating our dream jobs within the company, and I’ve attended conferences and workshops that align with my passions. It’s refreshing to work for leadership that cares about my growth as an employee and individual.
Insurance: A Weight Lifted Off
Having full medical and dental insurance has been a lifesaver. I no longer worry about affording medical bills, and I can take control of my health without breaking the bank. My employer-funded HSA has given me peace of mind, and I’m grateful for this benefit.
My Own Haven
I was thrilled to discover I had my own private office on my first day. It’s become my creative sanctuary, where I can express myself and stay productive. I’ve personalized my space with design inspiration and favorite books, making it a place I look forward to every morning.
A Cornucopia of Free Food
Last but not least, my office is always stocked with free food and drinks. From candy and chips to fruit and soda, it’s a constant surprise. On top of that, our office often orders meals for team members, saving me hundreds of dollars in my budget. It may seem trivial, but it’s a perk that makes a big difference in my daily life.
