As the holiday season approaches, many of us are reflecting on our accomplishments and setting new goals for the upcoming year. I’m no exception. Like many, I enjoy making New Year’s resolutions and challenging myself to achieve them. However, I’ve often found that my enthusiasm wanes by March. Determined to break this cycle, I set out to make 2017 a year of meaningful progress.
Getting Healthier: A Work in Progress
One of my top resolutions was to prioritize my health. While I didn’t make significant strides in this area, I did take some important steps. Joining a gym in June and incorporating daily walks into my commute have been beneficial. However, I recognize that I still rely too heavily on convenience foods and need to make a conscious effort to cook more and explore healthier options. In 2018, I plan to analyze my gym membership and consider alternatives that better align with my goals.
Reading: A Habit Worth Cultivating
Another resolution was to read at least one book per month. While I fell short of this goal, I’m proud to have read eight books so far this year – a significant improvement from last year’s tally of two. To stay on track, I’ve learned to utilize my commute by reading on the train and listening to audiobooks during downtime. I’ve also discovered the value of saving articles to read later using Pocket. If you’re struggling to find time to read, consider joining a book club or exploring new formats like audiobooks.
Experiencing Life to the Fullest
One resolution that I’m thrilled to have stuck to is prioritizing experiences over material possessions. This year, I’ve created lasting memories by taking a short vacation, attending concerts and Cubs games, and exploring my city’s hidden gems. By allocating my budget towards experiences, I’ve found a greater sense of fulfillment and happiness. I highly recommend adopting this approach, even if it means making small changes to your daily routine.
The Power of Imperfection
As I reflect on my progress, I’m reminded that resolutions don’t have to be perfect. It’s essential to acknowledge areas for improvement and make adjustments as needed. By recognizing my shortcomings, I’ve been motivated to increase my gym visits and recommit to my goals. Remember, you don’t need to wait until January 1 to set new goals – every day is an opportunity to make positive changes.
