Embracing a Fresh Start: A New Approach to New Year’s Resolutions
As the calendar flips to a brand new year, I’m filled with excitement and anticipation. There’s something invigorating about turning the page to a fresh chapter, don’t you think? In my previous post, I shared my thoughts on why I prefer to set “end of year” resolutions. Now, with 2019 in full swing, it’s time to rethink our approach to goal-setting.
Rethinking Resolutions
Let’s face it: most New Year’s resolutions fizzle out within weeks, sometimes days, of being made. I’m not cynical enough to believe they’re worthless, but I do recognize the importance of approaching goal-setting with a fresh perspective. This year, I’m taking a different tack. Instead of crafting specific, measurable goals, I’m identifying three core themes that will guide my decisions and actions throughout the year.
Themes Over Targets
These themes won’t be SMART goals, but that’s the beauty of it. They’ll be flexible, broad, and complementary to my aspirations. By focusing on themes rather than targets, I’ll cultivate the characteristics behind the goal, rather than just chasing a specific outcome. For instance, if I wanted to become a morning person, I’d need to develop self-discipline, enthusiasm, and dedication. It’s about building the habits and traits that will help me achieve my goals, rather than just checking boxes.
My Three Themes for 2019
After some reflection, I’ve identified three core themes that will guide my personal development this year:
1. Consistency
This one will be a challenge for me, as I tend to dabble in various projects and struggle to maintain momentum. This theme is all about establishing consistency in every aspect of my life, from exercise routines to content creation and sleep habits.
2. Spiritual Grounding
I’ve been wanting to deepen my spiritual practice, but it often takes a backseat to other priorities. This year, I’m committed to refocusing my efforts and aligning my actions with my beliefs. This means prioritizing prayer, reflection, study, and community involvement.
3. Drive
This theme is about taking initiative, being motivated, and owning my decisions. It’s about being proactive rather than reactive, and making intentional choices that align with my values. While it’s harder to quantify, I envision this theme translating to actions like reaching out to others first and making deliberate decisions rather than relying on circumstance.
The Journey Matters
Will I master these themes in 2019? Unlikely. But that’s not the point. Personal growth is a lifelong journey, and this exercise gives me a clear direction to focus on throughout the year. What three words would you choose to encapsulate your goals for this year?
