Taking the Leap: How to Land Your Dream Mentor
Overcoming Fear and Taking Action
Mentoring is an essential part of professional development, yet many of us put it off due to fear of rejection, failure, and putting ourselves out there. But what if I told you that it’s worth facing those fears head-on? I recently took the plunge and reached out to my ideal mentor, and the experience was nothing short of incredible.
Reaching Out to My Dream Mentor
On a Thursday night, I sent a cold email to my dream mentor, a highly respected and accomplished woman in her field. To my surprise, I received a response the very next morning! What made my approach successful? I did my homework, wrote a personalized email that showed appreciation for her time, and offered to give back in return. By making the email about her, I demonstrated that I valued her expertise and wasn’t just looking for a one-way gain.
Preparing for the Meeting
Before our meeting, I made sure to prepare thoroughly. I researched my mentor’s background, practiced pronouncing her surname correctly, and prepared thoughtful questions and talking points. This not only helped me feel more confident but also showed that I respected her time and expertise.
The Day of the Meeting
On the day of the meeting, I woke up early, paid attention to my appearance, and arrived at the location with plenty of spare time. I reviewed my notes and questions beforehand, which helped calm my nerves and ensure I was fully present during our conversation. I also made sure to be polite and engaged with everyone I met, from the receptionist to the barista.
Making a Strong Impression
During the meeting, I maintained eye contact, gave a firm handshake, and avoided distractions like my phone. By being fully present and engaged, I showed respect for my mentor’s time and expertise. At the conclusion of the meeting, I asked where I could take my dirty dishes (because I believe in humility) and gave another strong handshake with good eye contact.
After the Meeting
After the meeting, I felt elated and motivated. I celebrated my win by doing a happy dance in the lift (when I was alone, of course!) and sent a bouquet of flowers to my mentor as a thoughtful gesture. I also took action on the tips and advice she provided, which helped me stay motivated and focused.
The Takeaway
Reaching out to a mentor may seem daunting, but it’s worth facing your fears and taking action. By doing your homework, being respectful, and showing appreciation for your mentor’s time, you can create a lasting and mutually beneficial relationship. So, take the leap and reach out to your dream mentor – you never know where it might lead!
