From Scratch to Success: How I Built a Thriving Freelance Career in a New City

Building a Thriving Freelance Career in a New City

When I made the bold decision to start my freelance career in Boston, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. But a year later, I’m thrilled to report that my freelance income has not only stabilized but also skyrocketed.

Laying the Foundation

Initially, I secured three part-time positions as a violin teacher at local schools, which provided a solid foundation for my freelance career. Although the summer months were slow, I got lucky when my parents moved to the area and I was able to set up a home private teaching studio in a family-friendly neighborhood.

Prioritizing Time and Increasing Rates

As I refined my online presence and expanded my website, my home studio began to flourish. I didn’t hesitate to charge my worth, given my degrees and training, and I replaced an unpleasant program with a more promising one that valued my time and convenience.

Diversifying Income Streams

By the start of the 2018-19 school year, I had built a sizeable student base, been promoted to Ensemble Director at one program, and was consistently attracting new students to my home studio. My reputation was growing, and my freelance income had more than doubled from the previous year.

Weathering Unexpected Setbacks

When a health emergency required an appendectomy, my private home studio took a hit. But thanks to my multiple sources of income and self-purchased health insurance, I was able to absorb the temporary income loss and bounce back quickly.

Taking Control of My Finances

Recently, my sister announced her plans to move to Chicago, leaving me to consider how to cover her share of the mortgage payments. Instead of bringing in a roommate, I decided to take on the responsibility myself, with the goal of eventually covering the entire mortgage payment.

Finding Stability in an Unstable Field

As a freelance musician and teacher, I’ve faced concerns about the viability of my career. But I’ve learned that with hard work, determination, and a bit of luck, it’s possible to establish a stable financial foundation. I’m proud to say that I’ve tripled my starting point monthly freelance income during the school year and doubled it during the summer months.

Embracing the Potential

I hope my story sheds light on the possibilities of a freelance career in the music field. While there are challenges, there’s also tremendous potential for growth and success. I’m excited to see where my path takes me in the years to come.
