Embracing the Art of Transition
As I reflect on my recent move from Jakarta, I’m reminded that change is an inevitable part of life. With each new chapter, we’re presented with opportunities to grow, learn, and evolve. But it’s easy to get caught up in the logistics of transitioning – booking flights, packing up our lives, and saying goodbye to loved ones. While these tasks are essential, they shouldn’t overshadow the importance of cherishing the moments that make a place truly special.
The Beauty of Departure
When I knew I was leaving Jakarta, I began to see the city through new eyes. I took more photos, wrote more stories, and soaked up every moment I could. It wasn’t about trying to freeze time or hold onto a specific version of myself; it was about capturing the essence of the city and my experience within it. I realized that when we know we’re leaving a place, we look at it differently – we appreciate its quirks, its beauty, and its people in a way we never did before.
The Power of Observation
As I traveled through Asia, I found myself observing the world around me with fresh eyes. I wrote poetry, nonfiction, and short stories, inspired by the new sights, sounds, and smells. Being a stranger in a new land allows us to see things more clearly – we notice the little details that often go unnoticed when we’re familiar with a place. But I also knew that I was missing out on the bigger picture – the nuances and complexities that can only be understood by living in a place for an extended period.
The Comfort of Routine
When we finally settle into a new routine, it’s easy to forget to appreciate our surroundings. We become comfortable, but comfort can quickly turn into complacency. We stop noticing the beauty in our daily lives, the way the sunlight filters through the trees, or the sound of birds chirping outside our windows. As I move forward, I’m making a conscious effort to appreciate the location I’m in and my role within it. It’s a lofty goal, but one that’s essential for truly living in the present moment.
The Value of Every Stage
There’s value in every aspect of coming, staying, and going somewhere. Whether we’re saying goodbye to a place we love or hello to a new adventure, each stage offers its own unique lessons and opportunities for growth. My hope is that I’ll appreciate all three stages of being in a place while I’m currently living there – not just when I’m preparing to leave or arrive. By doing so, I’ll be able to truly cherish the beauty of transition and the art of living in the present moment.
