The Power of Influence: How Instagram Has Changed My Shopping Habits
As I approach my mid-30s, I’ve become increasingly mindful of where and what I buy. I crave unique, high-quality products that align with my personal style and values. And, surprisingly, I’ve found a treasure trove of such gems on Instagram.
A Celebration of Independent Businesses
Since joining Instagram in 2015, I’ve spent around £1,700 on products I discovered through the platform. But I don’t see this as an embarrassing confession; rather, it’s a testament to the power of influence wielded by independent businesses and creators. These entrepreneurs aren’t just peddling trendy items; they’re passionate about their crafts, dedicated to helping others, and committed to supporting their families.
Discerning Purchases
As I’ve grown older, I’ve become pickier about my purchases. I seek out items that resonate with my tastes and values. I want to support businesses that share my ideals, and I’m willing to invest in products that will stand the test of time. Instagram has become my go-to platform for discovering these hidden gems.
The Good, the Bad, and the Regrets
Of course, not every purchase has been a success. I’ve made a few impulse buys that didn’t quite live up to my expectations. There was the toddler cookbook that promised the world but delivered little more than expensive ingredients and unpractical recipes. And then there was the pricey PDF that failed to deliver on its promises.
The Miracle Dress and Beyond
But among the missteps, there have been some truly remarkable finds. Like the stunning teal silk dress from Wilson Trollope, which I discovered through Wellington Instagrammer Lucy Revill. This dress has become a staple in my wardrobe, making me feel confident and sophisticated every time I wear it. Then there’s the minimalist capsule wardrobe e-book by Jessica Rose Williams, which revolutionized my approach to fashion. And let’s not forget the beautiful print of Wellington waterfront at night by Laurie Winter, which now adorns my Edinburgh home.
The Most Valuable Purchase of All
My most significant investment, however, was the six-week career coaching course with Zoe Blaskey. This transformative experience helped me regain control of my working life after becoming a mom and gave me the confidence to pursue my writing dreams.
A New Era of Marketing
I’m not naive; I know I’m still being marketed to on Instagram. But I prefer this approach, where business owners share their stories, showcase their craftsmanship, and connect with their customers on a personal level. It’s a refreshing change from the traditional sales tactics that try to manipulate and mislead.
Curation is Key
Of course, it’s essential to approach Instagram with a critical eye. We must curate our feeds carefully, seeking out accounts that share our values and promote high-quality products. By doing so, we can harness the power of influence to discover unique treasures and support the businesses that truly deserve our attention.
Embracing Influence
In the end, I’m proud to say that I’ve been influenced by the incredible entrepreneurs on Instagram. By using the platform as a shop window, I’ve discovered products and experiences that bring me joy, align with my values, and will remain with me for years to come.
