Lessons Learned: My Journey to Building a Successful Membership Site
Embracing Failure as a Stepping Stone to Success
I often get asked how I manage my programs, and the truth is, I didn’t start out successfully. It’s taken years of learning, growing, and overcoming failures to get where I am today. Running a membership site is not easy, but it’s worth it. I’ve had my fair share of setbacks, but each failure has taught me valuable lessons that have helped me grow and improve.
The Importance of Mentorship
I’ve been fortunate to have an incredible mentor, Stu McLaren, who has guided me through the process of building and growing a profitable membership site. Stu is the founder of Wishlist Member, a software I’ve been using for my online courses, and the creator of The Membership Experience, a comprehensive training program on starting and growing a membership site.
Learning from My Mistakes
Before I share my successes, I want to talk about the mistakes I’ve made along the way. Because, let’s be honest, failures are an essential part of growth.
My 5 Biggest Failures Growing My Membership Sites
Failure #1: Quitting My First Membership Site
I quit my first membership site, The Get Ahead Club, in 2014. I was pregnant, overwhelmed, and struggling to keep up with the demands of running a membership site. I thought I had no choice but to quit, but in hindsight, I realize I just needed to simplify and delegate tasks.
Failure #2: Overwhelming My Members and Myself
I thought I had to publish new content every week to keep my members engaged. But, I soon realized that this approach was overwhelming both my members and myself. I was creating too much content, and it was backfiring. My members were leaving because they felt overwhelmed, and I was burning out trying to keep up.
Failure #3: Doing Everything Myself and Being Scared to Delegate
I thought I could do everything myself, but I soon realized that I needed help. I was trying to manage my membership site alone, and it was unsustainable. I learned that delegating tasks and hiring help is essential to growth and success.
Failure #4: Starting a Membership Site for Myself, Not My Members
I started my first membership site for the passive income, not for my members. I didn’t research my ideal clients, and I didn’t have a clear success path for them. I soon realized that I needed to focus on providing value to my members, not just generating revenue.
Failure #5: Lazy Marketing and Too Scared to Launch
I didn’t have a marketing plan, and I was too scared to launch my membership site. I thought launching was stressful and overwhelming, but I soon learned that with a plan and the right strategy, launching can be fun and successful.
Moving Forward
I’ve learned from my mistakes, and I’ve implemented changes to grow and improve my membership sites. I’ve simplified my content, delegated tasks, and focused on providing value to my members. I’ve also developed a marketing plan and learned to launch successfully.
