Embracing Uncertainty: How a Side Hustle Saved My Career
Earlier this year, my life took an unexpected turn when I was forced to leave my comfortable university position after seven years. The uncertainty of my future was overwhelming, but I’m grateful for that push out of my comfort zone. Today, I’m the proud owner of an online Spanish school, and I attribute my success to a side project I started three years ago.
The Power of Diversification
As an academic, it’s easy to become disconnected from the “real world.” My side hustle taught me essential business skills, such as setting up a website, running social media campaigns, and understanding key terms like SEO and KPI. These skills are in high demand outside of academia, making it easier to transition to other sectors when needed.
Networking Beyond Academia
As an introvert, I used to feel awkward in large groups. However, my side project encouraged me to engage in business networking activities, where I met new people and gained valuable insights. By talking openly about my work, I’ve received new perspectives and opportunities that I wouldn’t have encountered within the academic circle.
Building Something I Own
In my previous role, I didn’t own the results of my projects. With my side business, I have full ownership and control over my brand, which motivates me to continue growing and developing it. Whether it’s publishing books or creating Instagram posts, I’m proud to call them my own.
Crisis Management
When my business partner left, I faced a challenging situation. However, I emerged stronger and wiser, learning the importance of having a formal departure agreement in place. This experience taught me how to cope with crises and adapt to unexpected situations.
Starting Your Own Side Project
With the abundance of online resources, starting a side project or business has never been easier. From books to podcasts, there’s a wealth of information available to guide you through the process. Don’t be afraid to take the first step – the benefits of having a side hustle far outweigh the risks.
