Embracing Sustainability: How One Student Turned Her Passion into a Thriving Business
As I scrolled through YouTube videos a few years ago, I stumbled upon the concept of “zero waste” living. At first, it seemed like an unattainable goal, but the idea lingered in my mind. I began making small changes, reducing my use of plastic bottles and takeaway coffee cups. By November 2017, I was committed to a plastic-free lifestyle, but I soon realized that my makeup routine was a major obstacle.
The Quest for Plastic-Free Makeup
After hours of research, I discovered that there were limited options for plastic-free makeup outside of the US and Australia. The cost of shipping from these countries seemed to negate any environmental benefits. Undeterred, I decided to take matters into my own hands and started creating my own makeup products.
From Passion to Profit
As I delved deeper into the world of zero waste makeup, I realized that many others were searching for Europe-based, plastic-free options. This sparked an idea – I could create a business that catered to this demand. With no prior business experience, I took the leap and created LunaZeroWaste on Etsy in mid-November 2017.
The Initial Investment
Setting up my business required an initial investment of £913.53 ($1,275.97), which included £513.53 ($717.27) for materials and ingredients, and £400 ($558.70) for safety testing certificates. Although this was a significant expense, I knew it was essential for creating a high-quality product.
The First Few Months
In my first month, I made £222.12 ($310.25) in sales, which didn’t cover my startup costs, but it was a promising start. In December, I spent £581.90 ($812.77) on ingredients and postage, but my sales increased to £664.53 ($928.18). By January, I had turned a profit, earning £519.14 ($724.55).
Financing My Business
To finance my business, I used some savings and part of my student loan payment. This allowed me to cover my startup costs, but it meant I had to be careful with my budgeting. I used an app called Moneybox to make small additions to my savings and meet my goals more quickly.
Marketing and Growth
Through hard work on Instagram and collaborations with bloggers and YouTubers, I developed a stable side income. By January 2018, I had made around £500 after expenses. In February, I focused on wholesale and in-person orders, building relationships with independent retailers and taking out a stall at a local artisan market. My profits for February are on track to double those from January.
The Future of LunaZeroWaste
By June 2018, I will have completed my teacher training year, and I plan to work on my business full-time. I’m lucky to have a career in teaching as a backup, but I’m confident that my business can thrive. My next steps are to find a mentor and continue building relationships with customers and retailers to help my business grow.

Starting your own business can be daunting, but it’s worth taking the risk. I’ve learned that with hard work and determination, you can turn your passion into a successful venture.
