Taking Control of Your Freelance Writing Career
As a freelancer, one of the biggest challenges is navigating the lack of structure and guidance that comes with working for yourself. Without a corporate framework to shape your development, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and struggle to move forward.

For me, the past year has been a whirlwind of writing assignments and deadlines, but I’ve come to realize that I haven’t been pushing myself to learn and grow as much as I should. With every project, I’ve honed my skills and received valuable feedback from editors, but I haven’t ventured beyond my comfort zone.
Four Resolutions for a Brighter Freelance Future
To take control of my freelance writing career, I’ve set four goals for the new year:
1. Prioritize Learning and Development
It’s easy to get caught up in meeting deadlines and chasing invoices, but I know that setting aside time for learning is crucial to my growth as a writer. This year, I’ll make time for courses, workshops, and activities that will help me strengthen my writing skills and market myself more effectively.
2. Focus on Passion Projects
In the early stages of building my career, I took on any project that came my way. But I’ve learned that writing about topics I’m not passionate about can lead to burnout and dissatisfaction. This year, I’ll focus on projects that excite me, like working with a private fostering agency, which brought me joy and fulfillment.
3. Embracing New Challenges
One of my favorite quotes is “say yes to every challenge, and then learn to do it later.” I’ve let fear hold me back from taking on bigger projects, but this year, I’ll make a conscious effort to say yes to opportunities that push me out of my comfort zone.
4. Knowing When to Say No
Saying no to projects can be tough, especially when every penny counts. But I’ve learned that saying no to bad projects can save time and energy in the long run. This year, I’ll prioritize my well-being and focus on projects that align with my values and goals.
By following these resolutions, I’m taking a proactive approach to my freelance writing career. It won’t be easy, but I’m ready to blaze my own trail and take control of my future.
