Embracing the Freelance Lifestyle
Six months ago, I took a leap of faith and left my full-time job in advertising. With only a few freelance contracts and leads, I was determined to make it work. It wasn’t easy, but after two and a half months of hard work, I landed another contract that allowed me to support myself fully as a freelancer and close my Airbnb account.
The Constant Hustle
As a freelancer, you’re likely doing it for one of three reasons: you prefer the freedom, you need to supplement your income, or you’re hoping for a better opportunity to come along. Initially, I fell into the last category, but I’ve since come to appreciate the hustle. It’s a constant in my freelance life, and it’s taught me to be resourceful and adaptable.
Finding My Footing
When I left advertising, I applied to full-time jobs, networked, and did everything I could to get back on track. But despite my efforts, I came up short. Instead of getting discouraged, I focused on my freelance projects, which kept me busy and motivated. Today, I have more bylines than I would have if I’d gotten a staff job, and I’ve met incredible people who have offered valuable advice and support.
The Perks of Freelancing
One of the biggest advantages of freelancing is the freedom to choose my projects and clients. I work with multiple companies, each with its own perks, and I can say yes to opportunities that align with my goals and values. I’ve also learned to appreciate the flexibility and autonomy that comes with freelancing.
Lessons Learned
During my time in advertising, I met many freelancers who were making a good living, but they lacked the security and benefits that came with a full-time job. As a freelancer, I’ve come to realize that security comes from hard work, dedication, and a willingness to continuously improve. By committing to the hustle and delivering high-quality work, I’ve been able to create a sense of security and stability.
Valuing Freedom
Freelancing has given me the freedom to pursue projects and clients that I’m passionate about, and to work with people who respect and value my contributions. While it’s not for everyone, I believe that freelancing can be a fulfilling and secure career path for those who are willing to put in the effort.
