Quit Your Job Like a Pro: 5 Mistakes to Avoid

Embracing a New Career Path: Lessons Learned from Leaving My Job

Six months ago, I took a bold step and left my full-time job to pursue a different career path. While I had planned financially for this transition, I realized that how I left my job was just as important as the preparations I made.

Respectful Departure

Looking back, I wish I had done things differently. I was so caught up in my plans that I didn’t stop to think about the impression I was making on my way out. I have immense respect for my former colleagues, but I let my frustrations get the better of me at times.

Mistakes to Avoid

Here are five specific mistakes I made when leaving my job, and how you can avoid them:

1. Neglecting Important Connections

I failed to reach out to the person who helped me get my job, someone I still admire. Don’t let time pass without expressing gratitude to those who have helped you. Send a belated email or message, even if it’s months later.

2. Showing Frustration

I let my frustrations show as my end date approached. Instead, save your concerns for the exit interview, where you can provide constructive feedback. Be honest, but professional, and express appreciation for the opportunities you’ve had.

3. Losing Touch

I didn’t make an effort to stay in touch with former colleagues. Attend events, even if you’re nervous, and don’t assume you won’t have anything in common with those who stayed with the company.

4. Neglecting Retirement Savings

I stopped contributing to my retirement account during a two-month period without a full salary. Don’t make the same mistake. Contribute to your SEP, IRA, or 401(k) as much as possible, taking advantage of tax deferrals.

5. Uncertainty About Leaving

I gave three weeks’ notice, which may have been too much. Be definitive about your decision to leave, and consider giving two weeks’ notice. Share your plans confidently, but don’t overshare.

By learning from my mistakes, you can ensure a smoother transition when leaving your job. Remember to prioritize respect, gratitude, and professionalism as you embark on a new career path.
