Embracing the Hustle: Why Side Gigs Are a Sign of Success
As I reflect on my journey as a writer, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing the hustle. For a long time, I was selective about what I shared with others about my work life. I presented myself as a successful professional writer, leaving out the less glamorous details of my side gigs. But the truth is, those side gigs were essential to making ends meet and allowed me to pursue my passion for writing.
The Power of Perception
I believed that projecting a certain image was crucial to attracting better writing jobs. If clients thought I was successful and in demand, they would be more likely to pay me what I was worth. And it worked – to some extent. But I was also driven by shame and embarrassment. I felt like I needed to hide my side gigs because they didn’t fit into my idealized vision of being a “real” writer.
Breaking Free from Shame
Looking back, I realize that my shame was misplaced. Side gigs are a normal part of many industries, and they allow us to pursue our dreams while making ends meet. They provide an opportunity to diversify our skill set, increase our financial security, and build the life we want on our own terms.
The Reality of Making a Living
As a writer, I don’t have the luxury of focusing on one project at a time. I need to take on multiple jobs to make a living. And that’s okay. I’ve learned to embrace the hustle and see it as a sign of success, rather than something to be ashamed of. My side gigs may not be glamorous, but they allow me to pursue my passion and create a life I enjoy living.
Redefining Success
Success isn’t about having one prestigious job or project. It’s about creating a life that works for you, with multiple streams of income and a diverse set of skills. It’s about being open to opportunities and embracing the hustle. So, let’s redefine what it means to be successful and celebrate the side gigs that make it all possible.
Embracing the Journey
I’m not the same person I was four years ago, tortured by what others might think of my employment status. I’ve learned to focus on what matters – creating a life I enjoy living and getting better at what I do every day. And I’m not alone. We all need to do what we must to get by, and sometimes that means taking on side gigs that may not be glamorous. But that’s okay. It’s all part of the journey, and it’s what makes life so much more fun and full of possibility.
