Embracing Your “Useless” Major: Turning Criticism into Career Success
As an English major, I’ve heard it all – “What’s the point of an English degree?” or “You’re going to end up teaching, right?” But I knew that my passion for writing and literature could lead to a fulfilling career. After graduating in 2016, I navigated a series of twists and turns, eventually landing a job in publishing. Looking back, I’ve identified three crucial steps that helped me succeed despite the skepticism surrounding my major.
Step 1: Explore Unconventional Internships
Don’t limit yourself to internships directly related to your field. I took a chance on an unpaid internship with a non-profit organization, which unexpectedly led to a publishing internship and eventually, a paid job. The skills I developed in project management and advocacy proved invaluable in the publishing industry. If unpaid internships aren’t feasible, consider volunteering or joining clubs on campus to build your resume and network.
Step 2: Build an Emergency Fund
Having a financial safety net allowed me to take calculated risks and pursue opportunities that aligned with my goals. An emergency fund can help you weather the uncertainty of post-graduation life and afford to hold out for a job that truly excites you. I wish I had saved more during undergrad, but it’s essential to prioritize saving and budgeting.
Step 3: Leverage Professor Feedback and Guidance
Take advantage of your professors’ expertise and critiques. I benefited greatly from extra workshops and writing classes, which improved my craft and helped me build relationships with professors who could offer valuable advice and recommendations. Don’t be afraid to reach out to professors who can provide insights into your industry and help you navigate the job market.
Staying True to Yourself
It’s not easy to ignore the doubts and criticism that come with pursuing a “useless” major. But if you’re passionate about your field, don’t let others discourage you. By taking calculated risks, building a support system, and staying open to opportunities, you can turn your degree into a successful and fulfilling career.
