Financial Regrets: 10 College Mistakes That Cost Me Thousands
As I reflect on my college years, I’m reminded of the many financial missteps I made that ultimately cost me a small fortune. While it’s easy to point fingers at lavish spring break trips or partying habits, my biggest regrets stem from what I didn’t do. Here are the top 10 financial mistakes I made in college that I wish I could undo.
Lack of Budgeting Savvy
I entered college without a clue about budgeting, and my strategy was to work enough to pay bills and dip into savings when necessary. Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t accumulate massive debt, but I could have set myself up for long-term financial success by tracking my spending and creating a budget.
Neglecting Savings
I knew saving was important, but I treated it as a luxury rather than a necessity. With a small amount of disposable income, I could have built a safety net or invested in my future. Instead, I spent most of it on social outings and unnecessary expenses.
Failing to Set Boundaries
I spent a fortune on social events I didn’t want to attend, simply to avoid FOMO and fit in. Learning to say “no” and prioritize my own desires would have saved me hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
Missing Out on Side Hustles
Despite being busy, I could have dedicated a few hours a week to a side hustle, generating extra income and building my resume. Opportunities like blogging, freelance writing, or selling items online could have added up to a significant sum.
Taking the Easy Way Out
When choosing electives, I opted for easy classes to boost my GPA. In hindsight, taking courses in business, finance, or marketing would have provided valuable skills and knowledge for my future career.
Failing to Network
College offered a built-in social network, but I didn’t take advantage of it. I stuck to my close friends and didn’t connect with classmates, professors, or attend career fairs. Building relationships with people in my field could have led to opportunities, referrals, and valuable insights.
Weak Resume
My part-time jobs in food and retail didn’t showcase my skills or align with my career goals. I wish I had strengthened my resume with internships, volunteer work, or student organizations.
Overlooking Student Discounts
I neglected to take advantage of student discounts, which could have saved me a significant amount of money. A little research and planning would have gone a long way.
Masking Insecurities with Money
I spent money on things to feel less insecure, but this only provided temporary relief. Instead, I should have addressed the root causes of my insecurities and worked on self-acceptance.
Playing it Safe
I let fear of judgment hold me back from pursuing creative hobbies and interests that could have turned into side hustles or sustainable income streams. I wish I had been more confident in my endeavors and taken more risks.
By sharing my financial regrets, I hope to inspire others to avoid making the same mistakes and take control of their financial futures.
