Taking Control of My Finances: A University Student’s Journey
As a 19-year-old university student in Italy, I’ve been inspired to take charge of my financial life after reading about the importance of financial literacy. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of personal finance, I’m determined to educate myself and develop good habits.
Understanding My Situation
Unlike many students in the United States, I don’t have to worry about student loans. In Italy, public universities are free, and my parents cover my living expenses. However, this doesn’t mean I can ignore my financial responsibilities. I’ve realized that I need to start building discipline and awareness about money management to prepare for my future.
Setting Goals
To get started, I set four goals for myself:
1. Getting a Part-Time Job
I’ve begun tutoring a student, which not only earns me money but also helps me develop valuable skills. I recommend getting a part-time job to every student, regardless of whether you need the money or not.
2. Managing My Money
I’ve created a simple system to track my money using a money box. I’ve divided my savings into three categories: personal investments, earnings, and weekly budget. This helps me prioritize my spending and make conscious decisions about my money.
3. Monitoring My Expenses
Even though my parents cover most of my expenses, I still spend money on my own. I want to be aware of where my money goes, so I’m tracking my weekly expenses to identify areas where I can improve.
4. Building My Professional Profile
To increase my chances of getting a full-time job during the summer, I’m working on creating a professional CV. This will help me stand out in a competitive job market.
Taking Small Steps Towards Financial Freedom
These may seem like baby steps, but I’m proud to be taking control of my finances. I’ve learned that you don’t need a lot of money to start learning about personal finance. By taking small steps today, I’ll be better prepared for the financial responsibilities that come with adulthood.
