Navigating Uncertainty: How People Are Coping with Social Distancing
It’s an unprecedented time, and our collective reality has shifted dramatically in just a few short weeks. As we adapt to a new normal of social distancing, it’s essential to prioritize our well-being and find ways to stay positive, productive, and connected.
Staying Active and Connected
For many, the key to coping lies in finding creative ways to stay active and engaged. Trevor and his partner adopted a new furry friend, Lobo, who has brought joy and companionship to their lives. They’ve also incorporated daily walks into their routine, which has helped reduce anxiety and increase feelings of calm.
Joan and her boyfriend have found solace in their daily happy hour walks, bundling up and exploring their Chicago neighborhood despite the chilly weather. This ritual provides a much-needed break from the monotony of being indoors and allows them to connect with each other and their community.
Productivity and Routine
Others have turned to productivity and routine to stay grounded. Katie, a self-proclaimed homebody, has implemented a time-tracking system to stay focused and on top of her work. She’s also made time for virtual social events, like a virtual party with friends, and has been reorganizing her bookshelves – a task she’d been putting off for far too long.
Taylor, who’s not able to work from home, has used this time to focus on self-improvement. She’s committed to daily bodyweight exercises, yoga, and learning new skills through online courses and audiobooks. She’s also prioritized cooking and has mastered three new recipes, finding joy in the process.
Mindfulness and Self-Care
Mindfulness and self-care have become essential for many during this time. Brianna’s daily routine consists of meditation, journaling, and movement, helping her stay centered and calm. Vianna has organized daily virtual happy hours with friends, using Zoom and Skype to connect with loved ones.
Finding Joy in the Little Things
In the midst of uncertainty, it’s easy to get caught up in the negative. But many have found ways to focus on the positive, finding joy in the little things. Lyss has started placing carryout orders from local restaurants, then picking them up during her cool-down after a short run. Mackenzie has taken to learning a new TikTok dance every day, keeping herself humble and fit.
Community and Connection
Perhaps most importantly, people are finding ways to connect with others, even from a distance. Tis has started an online Mandarin language club, and Cecilia has made it a point to reach out to people in her network, reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances.
As we navigate this uncharted territory, it’s heartening to see people coming together, finding ways to support each other, and sharing their experiences. By prioritizing our well-being, staying connected, and finding joy in the little things, we can get through this challenging time together.
