Sacrifices Worth Making: Chasing Dreams and Overcoming Fears

Chasing Dreams Requires Sacrifices

In October 2018, I embarked on a mission to eliminate my $16,000 debt and save $35,000 for a year-long trip around the world. It was a daunting goal, but I was determined to make it happen. Fast-forward to today, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve paid off my debt and am on track to meet my target by June 2020. However, this achievement hasn’t come without its costs.

Putting Priorities First

Before setting out on this journey, I had considered investing in a house. It seemed like the responsible thing to do, but deep down, I knew it wasn’t what I truly wanted. I wasn’t happy in my current city, and the thought of being tied down to a property was overwhelming. So, I made the tough decision to put my travel dreams first.

Relationships Take a Hit

Paying off debt and saving for travel requires a tremendous amount of time and effort. I’ve had to take on two jobs, working around 70 hours a week, which has left me with little time for socializing. My relationships have suffered as a result, but I’ve learned to maintain connections with loved ones through regular phone calls and texts. It’s not ideal, but it’s a temporary sacrifice I’m willing to make.

Embracing Uncertainty

One of the most significant sacrifices I’ve made is giving up stability. I’ll be leaving behind my job, home, and savings to pursue a dream that may not provide a tangible return on investment. It’s a daunting prospect, but I believe it’s worth the risk. I’d rather take the leap and explore the world while I have the chance than look back on this period of my life with regret.

Dealing with Criticism

Not everyone understands my decision to save for travel instead of investing in a house or other traditional assets. I’ve faced criticism from acquaintances, friends, and family members who think I’m being irresponsible. But I’ve learned to tune out their opinions and focus on my own goals. This experience has taught me to set firm boundaries and prioritize my own needs.

Facing Fears Head-On

As I prepare for my trip, I’m forced to confront my own insecurities and fears. I’m not a naturally brave person, and the thought of navigating unfamiliar places and situations can be overwhelming. However, I’ve come to realize that it’s okay to be afraid and that I don’t have to be perfect to take on new challenges. I’m learning to trust my instincts and prepare for the unexpected.

The Value of Sacrifice

Achieving our goals often requires us to give up things that are important to us. Recognizing the sacrifices involved is crucial to determining whether our goals are truly worth the effort. For me, the answer is clear: the freedom to explore the world and pursue my passions is worth the temporary sacrifices I’m making.
