Living Abroad: A Dream Within Reach
Many of us dream of moving abroad, but it’s often seen as an unattainable goal, reserved for those with unlimited financial resources. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. We’re exploring the cost of living in various countries, highlighting individuals who have made the move and are willing to share their experiences.
Meet Chelsea Alventosa, Living in Arcos de la Frontera, Spain
Chelsea, originally from Buffalo, NY, made the move to Arcos de la Frontera in the Cádiz region of Andalucía, Spain in 2011. She shares her insights on what it takes to fund a life abroad.
A Career as an English Teacher
Chelsea works as an English teacher, instructing students ranging from age five to adults. She initially worked in public primary schools as an English teacher and cultural assistant, and later transitioned to a private language school.
The Path to Spain
Chelsea discovered the language assistant program through her college advisor. After a lengthy application process, she secured a placement in Andalucía and began working in October 2011. Her father contributed to her one-way ticket as a birthday and Christmas gift.
Monthly Expenses
Chelsea’s monthly stipend as a language assistant was 700€, which covered her expenses. She later took on part-time jobs to increase her income, enabling her to travel more. Currently, she works full-time, earning around 300€ less than her previous dual-income situation.
Cultural Immersion
Chelsea highlights the benefits of living in a smaller town, where integration into the community is easier. She appreciates the friendly locals, sunny weather, and mild winters, which facilitate socializing and cultural exchange. Her Spanish partner has also helped her navigate the customs.
Challenges and Culture Shock
Chelsea notes that the biggest challenge is adapting to the strong food traditions, where meal times are sacred. She experienced culture shock, particularly when it came to breakfast foods, which differ significantly from those in the US.
Overcoming Obstacles
Chelsea faced few obstacles, thanks to her supportive family and pre-arranged job. She advises others to study Spanish, as the accent in the south can be thick, and many locals don’t speak English.
Visa Process and Costs
Acquiring a visa involved a background check, official seal, proof of financial stability, and health insurance. The process took several months and cost $160.
Surprising Expenses
Chelsea was surprised by the start-up costs of moving abroad, including furnishing her apartment and adjusting to the local cost of living. However, she finds the overall cost of living in southern Spain to be lower than expected.
Chelsea’s story serves as a reminder that moving abroad is within reach, with careful planning and a willingness to adapt to new cultures.
