Finding Myself: A Journey of Self-Discovery Abroad

Finding Myself Abroad

A Leap of Faith

When I graduated from college, I knew exactly what I wanted to do – teach abroad in France. The thrill of adventure, immersing myself in a new culture, and exploring Europe on a whim was too enticing to resist. I didn’t let the lack of formal teaching experience or a clear plan for after my year’s contract hold me back. I took the leap, and it was a decision that would change my life forever.

The Harsh Reality

But living abroad without the support of a university was a rude awakening. The endless paperwork, health forms, and meetings were overwhelming. As an “assistant” teacher without the authority to give grades, I struggled to earn the respect of my students. There were days when I felt like crying, and the loneliness was suffocating. Yet, amidst the chaos, I found moments of beauty – like the time I taught a class after a terrorist attack, and my students grappled with hate and fear for the first time.

Traveling and Growing

Despite the challenges, I made the most of my time abroad. I set a goal to visit every region in France, and with careful planning and a tight budget, I achieved it. Traveling opened my eyes to new experiences, people, and perspectives. It was during this time that I discovered my independence, confidence, and patience.

The Reverse Culture Shock

When my contract ended, I returned home, feeling lost and uncertain. I had to readjust to life in America, living with my parents, and finding a career path. The transition was tough, and I felt like I was stuck in limbo. I went through the motions of completing a graduate certificate program, but my heart wasn’t in it. I turned down a coveted internship in New York City, feeling unfulfilled and restless.

Finding My Way

It took a grueling internship with a demanding boss to shake me out of my funk. With a two-hour commute each way, I was forced to re-evaluate my priorities. Eventually, I landed a job that brought me meaning and purpose. I had found myself again, but this time, I was better, wiser, and more resilient.

Lessons Learned

Teaching abroad may seem like a dream come true, but it’s not without its challenges. Coming back home without applicable experience can be a hindrance. However, my year abroad taught me invaluable lessons – independence, confidence, cool-headedness, and patience. It was a journey of self-discovery, and although it almost ruined me, it ultimately led me to find the better version of myself.
