The Hidden Struggles of Sex Workers’ Finances
As a transmasculine sex worker of color, I’ve experienced firsthand the complexities of managing my finances. From navigating taxes to securing stable housing, every aspect of my financial life is affected by the stigma surrounding sex work.
The Reality of Sex Work
People often harbor misconceptions about sex workers, assuming we have pimps and earn thousands per trick. These misconceptions lead to cultural and institutional misunderstandings, making it difficult for us to access essential services and resources.
My Unique Financial Challenges
Living at home with my parents helps me save on rent, but I still face unique expenses. My daily commute to school and my non-sex-work job takes almost two hours, requiring a costly train pass. I’ve had to get creative with my finances, especially when saving up for top surgery.
The Impact of Sex Work on My Savings
Sex work has played a significant role in helping me meet my savings goals, despite the challenges. However, I’ve realized that I severely undervalued myself, missing out on potential income. I’ve had to accept clients who don’t feel safe, which can be risky as a trans person of color.
The Pandemic’s Devastating Effect
The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated my finances. With in-person sex work no longer an option, I’ve had to move online, where competition is fierce and platforms are unreliable. I’ve lost about 75% of my expected income, making it difficult to make ends meet.
A Call for Change
My story highlights the need for systemic change. Sex work should be legal and decriminalized, allowing sex workers to access essential services and resources without fear of persecution. This change would improve the financial lives of sex workers, particularly those at the intersections of multiple oppressions and marginalization.
Breaking the Silence
I hope that by sharing my story, I can help break the silence surrounding sex work and its financial complexities. It’s time to acknowledge the realities of sex work and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
