Mastering the High Wire of Freelance Finances

The Art of Juggling Finances as a Freelance Performer

As a freelance actor in New York City, my life is a constant balancing act. Between auditions, multiple jobs, and a social life, managing my finances can be a daunting task. But I’ve learned to navigate the ups and downs with ease, and even thrive in the process.

The Importance of Flexibility

With a variable schedule, I need to be prepared for anything. That’s why I often have three to five jobs at a time, ensuring I can pay my rent and still have a life. I value experiences and socializing, so when friends invite me to happy hours or concerts, I’m always game. However, I never spend money I don’t have, and I’ve mastered the art of living on a budget.

The Credit Card Conundrum

You might think that with my frequent credit card applications and cancellations, my credit score would suffer. But surprisingly, it’s excellent. I’ve learned to utilize credit cards responsibly, taking advantage of 0% interest rates and rewards points. In fact, I’ve scored numerous free flights thanks to my savvy credit card management.

The Summer of 2019: A Financial Turning Point

That summer, I decided to take a break from teaching to focus on my own film project. To ensure financial stability, I applied for a Capital One Venture One Rewards card, which offered a 0% interest rate. With my remote styling job and occasional teaching gigs, I knew I could pay off the card easily once school started again.

The Pandemic’s Unexpected Silver Lining

When the global pandemic hit, I lost all my jobs and was forced to quarantine with my family in Indiana. Although I was still paying New York City rent, my expenses were minimal, and I was able to save money thanks to extended unemployment benefits and the stimulus check. By the end of June, I had paid off my credit card in full, and by August, I found a subletter for my apartment, freeing me from rent payments.

Lessons Learned

My financial journey may be unconventional, but it’s taught me valuable lessons. I’ve learned to appreciate the flexibility that comes with being a performer, and I’ve discovered that even in uncertain times, financial stability is possible. As I look to the future, I’m grateful for the unique path I’ve taken and the financial security I’ve achieved.
