Discovering the True Meaning of Richness
I used to think that living the dream meant owning a luxurious ocean-front home, driving a sleek convertible, and having all the latest gadgets. My ex-husband’s substantial income and my own salary combined to provide a comfortable lifestyle. We had the big house, the fancy trips, and the beautiful possessions. But when our marriage ended, I found myself starting over on my single salary.
Embracing a Simpler Life
Fast forward six years, and I’m remarried with a combined income that’s a fraction of what it used to be. Yet, I’ve never felt richer. The unexpected lessons I’ve learned have transformed my life. In my previous marriage, our massive home consumed my time and energy. Decorating and DIY projects took over my weekends, leaving me exhausted and unfulfilled. The short-term joy of buying new things wore off quickly, and the work was never done.
Finding Joy in Simplicity
In contrast, my current home is small and cozy, with no major projects to worry about. This means I can spend my weekends taking care of myself and my family. I hike, walk, read, and nap. I make time for friends, family, and adventures. The biggest “house” project is washing the bed linens. This simplicity has brought me a sense of freedom and joy.
The Power of Intentional Living
With a smaller home and single income, we’ve had to be intentional about our purchases. Every decision is thoughtful and purposeful, and that feels good. When we want to add something new, we create space in our home and budget, making the process meaningful. This approach has taught me the value of living within my means.
Health and Happiness
Living in a smaller house and filling my time with activities that nourish my soul has led to improved health and energy. I’m no longer exhausted every day, and I’ve found the time and motivation to pursue activities I love, like fitness classes and hiking. I’ve even lost 30 pounds and maintained the weight loss over the years.
Financial Freedom
Smaller debt has given us bigger goals. We’ve replaced the BMW with a Kia, and our debt is now manageable. We’re working towards paying off our mortgage within a few years. By being careful with every purchase and saving before buying, we’ve gained financial control. This newfound freedom has brought me peace of mind.
The Accidental Investment
Downsizing my life has been an accidental investment that has yielded great returns. I’m happier, healthier, and more financially secure. Six years ago, I thought I had a great life, but I didn’t know that simplifying my life would bring me even more joy and fulfillment.
