Celebrating a Year of Motherhood: Lessons Learned
As I mark my daughter’s first birthday, I’m reminded of the incredible journey I’ve been on as a new mom. From the moment she arrived, sideways and unmedicated, I knew that I was capable of overcoming any obstacle.
Defining Success on My Own Terms
Before becoming a mom, I was consumed by my work, often prioritizing tasks that didn’t bring me joy. Taking a break for maternity leave allowed me to re-evaluate my priorities and focus on what truly matters. I learned to say no to non-essential tasks and clients, and instead, created a business that aligns with my values and allows me to spend quality time with my child.
Getting clear on my desires was the first step in creating a career and life on my own terms. I had visualized my ideal “working mom” life for years, and I was determined to make it a reality. By committing to my goals, I was able to launch my dream career, allowing me to spend as much time as possible with my daughter.
Embracing Flexibility
In the early days of motherhood, I tried to stick to a rigid schedule, but it wasn’t sustainable. With no childcare or backup plan, I soon realized that I needed help. With the support of my husband and mastermind group, I learned to prioritize flexibility and adapt to changing circumstances.
I now focus on completing one big task per day, and I’ve learned to be kind to myself when things don’t go according to plan. By prioritizing what’s truly important, I’ve been able to achieve a better work-life balance and enjoy quality time with my daughter.
Facing Fears for True Happiness
This past year has been filled with risks and fears, from traveling internationally with a three-month-old baby to quitting our day jobs to pursue our business dreams. But by facing those fears head-on, I’ve experienced true happiness and joy.
Speaking in front of 800 women in Brazil was a life-changing experience that taught me to embrace uncertainty and push beyond my comfort zone. And when my husband quit his day job to join me in our business, we faced our fears together, knowing that it was the right decision for our family.
As I reflect on this past year, I’m reminded that motherhood has taught me to be brave, flexible, and true to myself. I’m excited to see what the future holds for my family and me.
