Unlock the Hidden Value in Your Clutter
This past year, many of us embarked on a journey to declutter our homes, inspired by the likes of Marie Kondo and Clea Shearer. But instead of simply tossing items into the trash or donation bins, what if you could turn them into cash?
The Power of Reselling
I’ve had remarkable success selling my unwanted items, raking in nearly $5,000 from platforms like OfferUp, Craigslist, Poshmark, and eBay. From canoes to Nintendo 64s, cleats to old printers, I’ve found that reselling can be a lucrative way to breathe new life into old possessions.
Choosing the Right Platform
When selling large items like furniture, local platforms like Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook Marketplace are ideal. Not only do they eliminate shipping hassles, but they also don’t charge seller fees, so you get to keep every penny. For smaller, shippable items, e-commerce sites like eBay and Poshmark can connect you with a national or international audience. Just be sure to factor in shipping costs – and recycle those old boxes and envelopes to save!
My Personal Best
One of my most impressive sales was a used Ikea kitchen island, which I sold for a profit of $200 just two years after purchasing it. And then there was the Texas Instruments TI-83 Graphing Calculator, which I sold for $33 in under five minutes on eBay. Yes, you read that right – under five minutes!
Getting Started
Feeling inspired? Here are five tips to help you turn your clutter into cash:
1. Research, Research, Research
Look up your item online using the brand name, serial number, or description. This will give you an idea of its value and help potential buyers know they’re getting a fair price.
2. Be Specific
Include as many item specifics as possible in your listing, including brand, year purchased, model number, color, and measurements. This will help buyers estimate how the item will fit in their home and reduce the risk of misunderstandings.
3. Honesty is the Best Policy
Be transparent about any imperfections or flaws. It’s better to be upfront than to risk a buyer backing out later.
4. Photography 101
Take clear, well-lit photos from multiple angles, including close-ups of any imperfections. A blank background can help your item stand out.
5. Ask for Reviews
Encourage buyers to leave reviews after they’ve received their item. Positive reviews can boost your credibility and increase future sales.
Bonus Tip: Check for Recalls
Look up if your item has ever been recalled by the manufacturer. If so, you may be eligible for reimbursement and even removal of the item from your premises.
So, what would you do with an extra $5,000 in your pocket?
