Simplify Your Space, Simplify Your Life

Embracing the Joy of Simplicity

Living in a small space can be a blessing in disguise. As a New Yorker, I’ve grown accustomed to making the most of every inch in my 400-square-foot apartment. Every piece of furniture serves a purpose, and vertical space is maximized to accommodate my belongings. Even vacuum bags come in handy to store out-of-season clothes.

The Challenges of Downsizing

Coming from the suburbs of New Jersey, where sprawling spaces were the norm, adjusting to a smaller living space was tough. I had to bid farewell to knick-knacks and tchotchkes that I once thought were essential. My small cookbook collection, which occupies about 40% of my counter space, is a testament to my love for cooking. However, a thoughtful friend’s gift – a giant decorative sign – ended up being a polite rejection, as I simply had no room for it.

The Benefits of Living Simply

Despite the initial struggles, I’ve come to appreciate the simplicity that comes with living in a tiny apartment. With less surface area to clean and maintain, I’ve been forced to declutter my life. While my home is cozy and crowded, rather than minimalist, I’ve learned to say “no” to excess. For instance, my bedroom can only fit a bed, which means I’ve had to get creative with storage. I’ve discovered that storing shoes in a cubby, makeup in a bin, and recycling in the open has become a necessity.

Simplifying Your Space, Simplifying Your Mind

Living in a small space has taught me to prioritize what’s essential. I believe that a simplified life leads to a simplified mind, boosting productivity in the process. It’s not just about our living spaces, but also our workspaces. As I grow older, I realize that I want to create an environment that fosters simplicity and clarity. By applying a discerning eye to the items we surround ourselves with, we can identify what we don’t need or use.
