A Family Tradition: Creamy Crab Fondue for the Holidays
This rich and indulgent fondue recipe has been a staple in our family for generations, and we’re excited to share it with you. It’s a perfect dish to serve on special occasions, like Christmas Eve, and is sure to become a new tradition in your household.
The Origins of a Family Favorite
I first discovered this recipe at a party in the mid-1970s, and after making a few tweaks, it’s been a beloved family tradition ever since. With its creamy texture and savory flavor, it’s no wonder it’s remained a favorite for so long.
Gathering the Essentials
To make this decadent fondue, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1-2 pounds of Velveeta cheese
- 3-6 oz cans of white crab meat (be sure to avoid claw or leg meat)
- 3 green onions
- A pinch of white pepper
- A good sweet white wine (such as Riesling)
- 1-16 oz jar of Best Foods Mayo
- 1-2 baguettes of French bread (depending on the size of your gathering)
Preparing the Fondue
To begin, cut the Velveeta cheese into medium-sized chunks and place them in a large Crockpot (about 1 1/2 Qt.). Set the heat to high and let the cheese melt. Meanwhile, clean and thinly slice the green onions, adding them to the cheese along with a couple of pinches of white pepper. Stir until well combined.
Next, add the 16 oz of Mayo, mixing it thoroughly into the cheese mixture. Stir occasionally until the cheese is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
Adding the Crab Meat
Drain the crab meat into a fine mesh strainer, rinsing it under cold water. Then, empty the crab meat into a bowl and sift through it with your fingers to remove any bits of shell. Once clean, add the crab meat to the melted cheese and stir until fully incorporated.
Finishing Touches
Add up to 1/4 cup of wine to the fondue, stirring it in well. Check the consistency, thinning it with a little milk if needed. Finally, turn the heat to low and prepare the baguette for dipping by slicing and halving it.
Serve and Enjoy!
This creamy crab fondue is sure to be a hit at your next gathering. Serve it with the crusty French bread and enjoy the ooohs and ahhhs from your guests. With its rich flavor and indulgent texture, it’s the perfect dish to make your holiday season merry and bright.
