Savor the Flavor of Homemade Tacos

A Delicious Twist on a Classic

Who says you need to rely on store-bought taco packets and hard shells to satisfy your Tex-Mex cravings? With Alton Brown’s seasoning mix and a simple DIY approach to fried corn tortillas, you can create a fiesta on a plate that’s sure to impress.

The Perfect Blend of Spices

To start, combine the following ingredients to create your own taco seasoning:

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon mild smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon hot smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon habanero powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

Mix well to ensure the cornstarch is fully incorporated and there are no lumps.

Frying Up the Fun

Next, heat about 3/4 cup of grapeseed or peanut oil in a cast-iron skillet until it reaches 350°F. Line a baking sheet with a double layer of paper towels and place it in a warm oven (250°F) to keep your fried tortillas warm.

Fry each tortilla individually, using tongs to carefully lay it in the hot oil and fold it in half after 15 seconds. Fry for an additional 30 seconds, flip, and fry for a final 30 seconds. The tortilla should be lightly browned and still flexible. Drain on the prepared baking sheet and repeat until all tortillas are fried.

Savory Beef and Toppings

In the same skillet, add 1 large diced red onion and 4 minced garlic cloves. Cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Then, add 2 pounds of ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks until browned, about 5 minutes.

Add the homemade taco seasoning and stir until combined. Finally, add 3/4 cup of water and cook, uncovered, until the mixture is bubbling and has thickened.

Assemble Your Masterpiece

Now it’s time to bring it all together! Fill your crispy fried tortillas with the savory beef mixture, topped with shredded lettuce, Mexican blend shredded cheese, and a dash of hot sauce (if desired).

With these simple steps, you’ll be enjoying a delicious homemade taco feast in no time!
