Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon

Let’s Get Baking!

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Arrange a rack in the center of your oven and preheat to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch round cake pan.
  2. Sugar and Spice: In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar, the brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Caramelized Apples: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large frying pan. Add the apples and lemon juice, tossing to coat evenly. Add half of the sugar mixture and cook until the sugar melts and the apples begin to soften, about 4 minutes.
