Embracing Simplicity: My Journey to a Tiny Wardrobe
Living with less has been a game-changer for me. Over the past year, I’ve drastically reduced my belongings to just 25% of what I once owned. While I still find myself occasionally questioning whether certain items are truly necessary, I’ve made significant progress – especially when it comes to my wardrobe.
A Closet Detox
When I began this journey, my closet was the first area I tackled. I donated a staggering four black garbage bags full of clothing, shoes, and accessories. Since then, I’ve continued to streamline my wardrobe, whittling it down to a mere 28 items of clothing. You might be surprised to learn that I only wear nine of those items on a regular basis.
A Uniform Approach
I’ve never been interested in fashion, and I don’t pretend to be a style expert. Growing up on the west coast of Canada, I’ve always been comfortable in jeans and flannel – and that’s still my go-to look today. I take care of my clothes and replace them as needed, but that’s the extent of my fashion knowledge.
Lessons from the Past
Looking back, I’m still puzzled by how I managed to accumulate so many clothes, shoes, and accessories in the first place. Most of what I got rid of was stuff I’d worn years ago – some of it dating back to 2005! It’s clear that I was holding onto items out of sentiment rather than practicality.
My Signature Look
On most days, you can find me wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a flannel shirt, Blundstone boots, and my trusty rain jacket. In the spring, I swap the boots for TOMS. I don’t do this to save time or money; I simply prefer the comfort and simplicity of a consistent wardrobe.
The Benefits of a Tiny Wardrobe
While I didn’t set out to create a capsule wardrobe, I’ve enjoyed the benefits of owning fewer clothes. Decision fatigue is a thing of the past, and I’ve saved time and money by avoiding impulse purchases.
A Peek into My Closet
My three-drawer dresser holds everything I need:
- Drawer #1: Jeans, khaki capris, a skirt, dresses, sports bra, and workout pants
- Drawer #2: Tank tops, t-shirts, casual tops, sweaters, flannel shirts, and a hoodie
- Drawer #3: Socks, bras, underwear, and accessories like shoes, boots, jackets, hats, and scarves
The Verdict
I technically own 75 items of clothing, but I only wear nine of them regularly. And you know what? Nobody has ever commented on my wardrobe choices. It’s just clothing, after all. By taking care of what I own and investing in quality pieces, I’ve found a sense of freedom in my tiny wardrobe. What about you – what does your wardrobe look like these days? Do you have a signature look?
