The Beauty of Ordinary: Embracing Simplicity for Financial Freedom

Embracing the Beauty of Ordinary

As I reflect on my upbringing, I’m reminded of the value of simplicity. Growing up in the East Midlands, UK, I often fantasized about being from a more exotic location, but now I’m proud to call this humble region my home. While I’ve developed a taste for international cuisine and enjoy traveling, I’ve come to appreciate the comfort of familiarity.

A Childhood of Frugality

My parents, who had me young and later went back to school, instilled in me the importance of living within our means. My dad worked multiple jobs while pursuing his design degree, and my mum juggled her studies with cleaning hotel rooms and driving me to school. We didn’t have a lavish lifestyle, but we made do with what we had. Our weekends were often spent at home, where we’d enjoy a home-cooked roast, do homework, and watch old war films together.

The Freedom of Slowing Down

As an adult, I’ve struggled with restrictive budgeting. I’ve tried various methods, from no-spend months to envelope systems, but they often left me feeling deprived and anxious. I’ve come to realize that my upbringing has taught me the value of slowing down and appreciating the simple things. By embracing a more relaxed pace, I’m able to save money without feeling restricted.

Breaking Free from Financial Anxiety

For those who grew up without much, the idea of budgeting can be triggering. It’s as if our minds are wired to resist limitations on our cash, fearing a return to those difficult times. But I’ve found that by allowing myself the occasional quiet weekend at home, I’m able to recharge and focus on my passions. This approach has helped me to prioritize my well-being and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

A Lesson from My Grandparents

My grandparents, both working artists, instilled in me the importance of a daily routine. They’d create art around mealtimes, tea, and biscuits, and spend their evenings listening to radio shows or watching TV. This monk-like routine taught me the value of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of ordinary moments.

Rethinking Financial Discipline

While financial bloggers often emphasize the importance of saying “no” to ourselves, I’ve found that “slow down” is a more effective approach. By embracing a more relaxed pace, I’m able to save money without feeling deprived. It may not be Instagram-worthy, but it’s a solution that’s worth trying.
