Solo Travel Essentials: Lessons from a European Adventure

Embracing Solo Travel: Lessons Learned on a Journey Through Europe

As a seasoned traveler, I’ve had my fair share of adventures with family and friends. But this summer, I decided to take the plunge and embark on a solo journey through Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. I opted for a group tour, specifically designed for solo travelers under 35, and it was an experience that taught me valuable lessons about money, convenience, and cultural immersion.

The Importance of Insurance

On the second day of my trip, I made a rookie mistake – I left my phone in a bar in Rome. Panic set in, but I was relieved to remember that I had insurance on my phone. This small investment gave me peace of mind, and I was able to enjoy the rest of my trip without worrying about the financial burden of replacing my phone. Insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it can be a lifesaver in unexpected situations.

Convenience and Comfort: Worth the Cost

While I could have planned the entire trip on my own, I chose to splurge on a group tour for the convenience and comfort it offered. Not having to worry about lodging, transportation, and itineraries was a huge weight off my shoulders. I was able to relax and enjoy the experience, rather than stressing about logistics. Additionally, traveling with a group provided a sense of safety and security, especially as a solo female traveler.

The Forgotten Exchange Rate

One of the biggest challenges I faced was navigating the exchange rate in Croatia, where the local currency is the Kuna. Without a clear understanding of the conversion rate, I found myself treating the Kuna like Monopoly money, which wasn’t the smartest financial move. In hindsight, I should have used my phone’s calculator or a budgeting app to track my expenses and stay on top of my spending.

Lessons Learned and Future Plans

This solo adventure taught me valuable lessons about the importance of insurance, convenience, and cultural awareness. I’m already planning my next group tour, armed with the knowledge and wisdom gained from this experience. With a few tweaks to my approach, I’m confident that my next trip will be even more successful and enjoyable. And, of course, I’ll be duct-taping my phone to my body to avoid any repeat performances!
