Fit on a Budget: How I Scored Free Gym Membership

Prioritizing My Fitness Passion

As a teacher, tutor, and freelancer, I’ve learned to allocate my income wisely to accommodate my priorities. And, for me, functional fitness takes center stage. I’m willing to invest in my well-being, and my gym of choice happens to be the most expensive in the city, with a monthly unlimited classes fee of $121.

Finding Ways to Reduce the Cost

While some might simply accept the price tag, I’m driven to find ways to minimize the expense. My gym offers a discount for advance payments, which I take advantage of. By paying for six months upfront, I receive a 25% discount, bringing the monthly cost down to $91. That’s a savings of $30 per month!

Leveraging My Skills

Another opportunity presented itself when our kids’ fitness coach needed to reduce her coaching hours. With my experience in team sports and summer camp coaching, I was asked to take over some of her classes. I jumped at the chance, not only to gain more experience but also to have my coaching income applied to my membership costs.

Creating Value Through Content

I noticed that our gym lacked a newsletter, which I saw as an opportunity to contribute. I began writing, designing, and producing a monthly newsletter, highlighting our members’ inspiring stories. This endeavor not only showcases my skills but also allows me to maintain a location-independent setup, ensuring I can continue this work even after I leave Jakarta.

A Win-Win Deal

By combining my coaching income with my newsletter efforts, I managed to secure a deal with the gym: my final six months of membership would be completely free of charge. In exchange for about eight hours of work each month, I get to enjoy my beloved gym without the financial burden. It’s a trade-off I’m more than happy to make.

Why It’s Worth It

Some might argue that I could save money and time by opting for a cheaper gym. While that’s true, I’ve fallen in love with my gym’s high-quality coaching, equipment, and community. I’m willing to put in the effort to make it work, and in doing so, I’m not only saving money but also enriching my experience and building my professional portfolio. For me, that’s a price worth paying.
