Florida’s Deadly Denial: A Pandemic Reality Check

A Deadly Reality Check: Living in Florida During the Pandemic

As a native Floridian, I’ve always cherished the beach as my sanctuary. But a recent trip to the coast was a harsh reminder of the devastating reality of living in a state ravaged by the coronavirus.

A State of Denial

Florida, known for its sun-kissed beaches and carefree vibe, has become a hotbed of COVID-19 cases. With over 360,000 confirmed cases and 5,071 lives lost, the numbers are staggering. Yet, despite the alarming statistics, many Floridians seem to be in denial. During my beach visit, I witnessed a disturbing lack of caution: children playing together without masks, families gathered in close proximity, and college students partying on boats.

A Personal Struggle

As someone who has been diligent about following CDC guidelines, I felt like an outsider among my own community. My decision to venture out was motivated by a desire to spend time with my brother before he returned to Seattle. But as I watched people flouting safety protocols, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt and anxiety. We lasted only 20 minutes on the beach before I insisted we leave, aware that any one of us could have been exposed to the virus.

The Bigger Picture

My experience is just a small part of a larger problem. Daily, I receive invitations to social gatherings, and it’s disheartening to see friends and acquaintances putting themselves and others at risk. As a responsible individual, I can only control my own actions. I’ve chosen to stay at home, wear a mask when necessary, and decline invitations that could compromise my safety.

A Call to Action

While I may not be able to change the behavior of others, I can encourage those who share my concerns to take a stand. By staying home, wearing masks, and speaking out, we can make a difference. Every individual who makes responsible choices contributes to flattening the curve and protecting those around them. In a state where recklessness seems to be the norm, I’m determined to be part of the solution, not the problem.
