Veggie Pups: A Fun Twist on Hot Dogs
Are you tired of serving the same old hot dogs at family gatherings or picnics? Look no further! These adorable veggie pups are a game-changer. Not only are they easy to make, but they’re also a great way to get your kids involved in the kitchen.
Getting Started
To begin, you’ll need a few simple ingredients, including soy hot dogs, all-purpose flour, and nonhydrogenated margarine. You can prepare the dough ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator overnight, making it a convenient option for busy families.
The Magic of Dough
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and wheat germ. Cut in the margarine until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Then, add the soymilk mixture and stir until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it’s smooth and pliable.
Rolling Out the Fun
Roll the dough out into a 10-inch square using a lightly floured rolling pin. Cut it into five 2-inch strips, and you’re ready to start assembling your veggie pups. Place a soy hot dog at a slight angle at the base of each strip, and roll it up in the dough, making sure to cover the hot dog from end to end. Press the seam and edges gently to secure.
Baking to Perfection
Place the veggie pups seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you’re baking them immediately, preheat your oven to 375°F. Otherwise, cover them in plastic wrap and refrigerate until morning. When you’re ready to bake, remove the pups from the refrigerator and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until they’re warmed through and the dough is browned on the bottom.
Variation: Piroshki
If you’re feeling adventurous, try making piroshki, small Russian hand pies filled with mashed potatoes, cooked kasha, or ground meat. Simply roll out the dough, cut it into rectangles, and place a small mound of your chosen filling in the center. Seal the dough completely and bake according to the instructions above.
These veggie pups are sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike. So why not give them a try and add some fun to your next family gathering or picnic?
